Calm Air Pilots Achieve New TA

The pilots of Winnipeg-based Calm Air are the latest ALPA group to reach a tentative agreement on a new contract. The CMA group TA’d a contract proposal last Friday after opening negotiations in April. The group used an interest-based bargaining approach, with a mediator from Canada’s Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service overseeing the process from the start.

House Passes “Helping Heroes Fly” Act

The Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l, thanks Representative Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) for her leadership in passage of the “Helping Heroes Fly Act,” which is a commonsense measure to ensure that our nation’s heroes can pass through airport security with the respect and dignity that they have earned. Allowing severely disabled and wounded service members and veterans to pass through expedited security screening not only honors our service members, but also moves the TSA toward a risk-based security approach to passenger screening, a necessary shift to focus resources on those who are intent on doing harm.

Nearly 200 ALPA Members Live in Area Affected by Oklahoma Tornadoes

All of us at the Air Line Pilots Association, Int'l, stand with those who have felt the effects of the disastrous tornadoes that have hit several communities outside Oklahoma City. Scenes of total devastation can be seen on news coverage of this tragedy as families cope with catastrophic losses. We are deeply concerned about our members and their families who may have been affected by the destruction that this horrible storm has caused. Our records indicate that 175 ALPA members live within a 100-mile radius of the area. We are working with individual MECs and mobilizing ALPA’s Critical Incident Response Program (CIRP) to help those in need.

ALPA Secretary-Treasurers Review Fiduciary Responsibilities

“As secretary-treasurers, you hold a unique position of trust within the Association—the trust that our pilots’ dues money is being spent wisely and prudently,” said ALPA Vice President–Finance/Treasurer Randy Helling to the attendees of this year’s ALPA MEC Secretary-Treasurers Conference. “Keep in mind as you serve your fellow pilots in this capacity that you’re managing their hard-earned dues dollars, and we need to make sure that we’re using that money to represent their interests as efficiently and prudently as possible.”

Helling is serving as moderator for the two-and-a-half-day conference, which features detailed presentations from national officers and the Association’s professional staff. More than 20 pilots representing 14 member pilot groups are participating in this week’s seminar, which is provided annually to educate ALPA’s financial gatekeepers about their fiduciary responsibilities as well as the many tools and other resources available to help them do their jobs.
